The Kind of Point Guard

Derrick Martell Rose (born October 4, 1988) is an American professional basketball player for the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Tigers and reached the NCAA national championship game in 2008. Shortly after, Rose declared for the 2008 NBA Draft and was selected first overall by the Chicago Bulls. In his first year of professional basketball, Rose was voted the Rookie of the Year and was selected to the All-Rookie Team. In his second season, Rose was selected as an NBA All-Star for the 2010 NBA All-Star Game; he was also named a starter for the U.S. team at the 2010 FIBA World Championships. Since being drafted, Rose has led the Bulls to the NBA Playoffs every year. In 2011, he received the NBA Most Valuable Player Award, becoming the youngest player ever to win this award. He joined Michael Jordan as the only Chicago Bulls players to win the honor.
In 2009, an NCAA investigation revealed that Rose's SAT scores had been invalidated, making him retroactively ineligible to play for Memphis. As a result, the NCAA vacated Memphis's entire 2007–08 season.
He was born in the Englewood area, one of the most dangerous neighbourhoods on Chicago's South Side. As his talent for the sport grew, Rose began to attract much more attention in Chicago's basketball circles. After he went to high school, he take part at Simeon Career Academy in 2003.In the 2009-2010 season, Derrick led the Chicago Bulls to their fifth playoff appearance in six years. Unfortunately, Chicago fell in the first round to the Cleveland Cavaliers, but it was a good season nonetheless, for both the Bulls and Derrick. That season, Derrick was elected to his first NBA All-Star game. Derrick became the first Bull to be honored with an All-Star appearance since Michael Jordan in 1998. Derrick played in 78 regular season games and tallied 6.0 APG and 20.8 PPG (solidifying his place as one of the top 15 scorers in the league), and 26.8 PPG in the playoffs. The 2009-2010 season saw Rose and the Bulls continue to grow, which set the stage for an incredibly successful 2010-2011 campaign. The 2010-2011 season was a historic one for both Derrick and the Bulls. Chicago finished the regular season with the best record in all of the NBA at 62 wins and 20 losses. During the season Derrick started for the Easter Conference All-Stars and managed a career high in ever major statistical category. Derrick played in 81 games averaging 4.1 rebounds, 7.7 assists, and 25 points per game. This production, along with Derrick's leadership on the court led to him becoming the league's youngest MVP in his history. Rose acquaired 113 first-place MVP votes from a panel of 120.

Derrick Rose made a name for himself in Illinois long before he became the Bulls star he is today.  He led Simeon Career Academy to back-to-back State Championships, was named USA Today High School Player of the Week, Illinois Mr. Basketball, was selected for the Nike Summit Game and McDonald’s All American Game.  After leading the Memphis Tigers to the NCAA Finals his freshman year, Rose became the first point guard to be drafted #1 in over a decade.  Despite the pressure and high expectations of being the Bulls' #1 draft pick (2009), Rose earned All-NBA First Team Honors, became the 5th player in NBA history to post 2,000 points, 600 assists and 300 rebounds in a season, and was Chicago’s first All-Star starter since Michael Jordan. Two years later, he was selected the 2011 NBA MVP, becoming the youngest player ever to win the honor. In late 2012, Rose went down to injury with a "pop" heard 'round Chicago and a torn ACL. We anxiously look forward to his return this NBA season.
